How to Choose a GMP Supplement Manufacturer in China: A Due-Diligence Checklist

A practical checklist for vetting supplement contract manufacturers in China — GMP and FDA verification, facility audits, R&D capability, samples, and export experience.

Choosing a supplement manufacturer in China is the highest-stakes decision in your entire business. A great factory is a growth partner. A bad one can cost you your reputation, your market entry, and your money.

The good news: you do not need to be a sourcing expert to pick well. You need a checklist, and the discipline to verify every item. This is that checklist.

China produces a large share of the world's dietary supplements, and for good reason:

  • Cost efficiency at scale, especially for gummies, softgels, and powders
  • Full-range manufacturing — many factories handle every dosage form under one roof
  • Rapid R&D — a good manufacturer turns a concept into samples quickly
  • Export infrastructure — mature sea-freight and documentation capabilities

The key is separating the well-run minority from the rest. Here is how.

The Verification Checklist

1. Verify Certifications — In Writing

Certifications are the floor, not the ceiling. Ask for copies and verify them.

  • GMP certification (the national GMP for dietary supplements)
  • FDA facility registration — required to sell into the US market
  • BRCGS / NSF / SGS — higher-tier certifications that signal audit discipline
  • Halal / Kosher — if your target market needs them

If a factory hesitates to share certification documents, treat that as a red flag.

2. Verify the Facility Actually Exists

Scams and "broker factories" are real. Protect yourself:

  • Ask for live video of the production line during a working day
  • Verify the address independently, and check the factory name against the certification documents
  • Ask for batch records and COAs — real factories have years of them
  • Use a verification service for larger orders, or visit if the order size justifies it

3. Assess R&D Capability

Your future competitiveness depends on the R&D team.

  • Does the factory have a dedicated laboratory with formulation capability?
  • How many new formulas does the R&D team develop per year?
  • Can they run stability studies and pilot batches in-house?
  • Will they do free formulation consultation before you commit?

A manufacturer that treats R&D as a service — not an upsell — is worth its weight in gold.

4. Test the Quality System, Not Just the Claims

  • Raw material control: does every incoming lot get identity and contaminant testing?
  • In-process control: weight variation, hardness, disintegration checks during production?
  • Finished product testing: full assay, heavy metals, and microbiology on every batch?
  • Traceability: can they trace a finished batch back to its raw materials?

Ask to see a real Certificate of Analysis (COA). The depth of the document tells you how seriously they take quality.

5. Understand MOQ and Flexibility

Your first order should not bankrupt you.

  • What is the MOQ per SKU? White-label formats should start in the hundreds of bottles, not tens of thousands.
  • Are trial orders available? A factory willing to do a small first order trusts its own product.
  • Does the MOQ include packaging? Always confirm.

6. Evaluate Communication and Export Experience

You will be working across time zones. Communication is infrastructure.

  • English fluency in your point of contact (or a reliable bilingual team)
  • Export documentation experience — commercial invoices, packing lists, COAs, certificates of origin
  • Shipping options — sea freight, air freight, and Incoterms you understand
  • Responsiveness — do they reply within 24 hours?

What to Ask in Your First Email

Send this exact list to every factory you are considering:

  1. Please share your GMP certification and FDA facility registration.
  2. What is your MOQ per SKU for gummies/softgels/tablets?
  3. Do you offer trial orders?
  4. What does your quality system cover — raw material, in-process, and finished testing?
  5. Can you provide a sample COA from a recent batch?
  6. What is your lead time from artwork approval to shipment?
  7. Which markets do you export to, and which certifications do you hold for them?

The factory that answers all seven clearly, with documents, is the one to shortlist.

Red Flags to Walk Away From

  • No verifiable GMP or FDA registration
  • Refuses video verification or site photos
  • Unusually high MOQs for new brands
  • Vague answers about testing and COAs
  • Pressure to pay before you have seen documents and samples

FAQ

Is it safe to use a supplement manufacturer in China? Yes, when you verify properly. GMP-certified, FDA-registered factories with export experience supply compliant products to markets worldwide.

Should I visit the factory before ordering? For significant orders, yes. For smaller first orders, a live video tour plus document verification is a reasonable substitute.

What certifications should a Chinese supplement factory hold? At minimum, national GMP. For the US and EU markets, FDA facility registration plus recognized third-party certifications like BRCGS or NSF are strong signals.

How do I know the factory is real and not a broker? Verify the registered address, ask for a live video of the production line, and request batch records and COAs. Real factories have all three.
